A Musical Experience They'll Remember!

A Fun Musical Experience They’ll Remember!

For your pre-teens ages 10 to 12, if it’s fun they’ll remember it!  And this can help lay a foundation for a lifetime of musical enjoyment.  Come this summer for an energizing and educational experience, where they will actively learn music from dedicated music professionals, build their confidence to sing in harmony with their friends and have a heap of fun in the process.

REGISTRATION CLOSED FOR 2017

What’s Included:

  1. Morning Stretching and Breathing:  When it comes to singing, our bodies are our instruments so we’ll start each day with yoga style stretching, mindful movement, breathing and toning (kirtan style) as prepartion for the day’s activites.
  2. Body Percussion: This physical and engaging activity teaches your children simple and complex rhythms using cool drumming patterns with their hands and feet.  Sure to cause lots of laughter!  Check out these links to body percussion FUN!

Hand Clap Skit, High School Talent Show

We Can Work It OutUVic Beatles Bodydub

    Just Clap Your Hands, STOMP

  3. Music Reading & Ear Training:  No previous experience necessary.  Our relaxed approach will give your children a better understanding of music notation, by showing them how to read and sing the notes on the page using the solfege system (do, re, mi…) and the number system (1,2,3…) interchangeably.  Both systems incorporate relevant theory and are are used in post secondary music education for all instruments.  Safe and supported improv activities will be used to deepen listening skills, gain independence and build confidence.
  4. Singing, Singing, Singing:  There will be singing throughout the day from fun and silly spur of the moment songs taught by ear to dedicated written ensemble arrangements sung in 4 part harmony.  Your children will enjoy songs from the 1600’s – today (rock, jazz, blues, folk, pop, rap, classical, multi-cultural/world)
  5. Vocal Technique:  Children will gain a better understanding of just how many ways they can use their singing voice to express themselves!  What the human voice is cabaple of doing is nothing short of AMAZING!  And contrary to what a lot of westerners think, YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE BORN WITH IT.

Sandi Melody is a university educated vocal performance expert who has been coaching professional vocalists for 23 years.  Like any skill, becoming a great vocalist is a trainable art.  Just as good actor can play many different characters, and a painter can blend colors to create new ones, a singer can learn to mix and manipulate their sound and develop skill to sing any style of music.  From rock to pop to classical, your children will discover just how many different authentic sounds they can make to express what’s in their soul!   Contemporary and classical vocal techniques will be incorporated into every song we sing.  Campers will learn to develop healthy vocal habits to produce genre specific sounds.  As they experience expressing different styles of music with the appropriate technique they will also be learning to distinguish the difference between appropriate and inappropriate sound production quality, and to protect the longevity of their voice.

  6. Outdoor activities:  The beautiful Cleveland Park is across the street where we can all have lunch (weather permitting), have a good walk/hike, play games or just chill.
  7. A Mini Concert: There will be a mini-concert Friday afternoon to which family is invited.

Harmony House always always been nothing but awesome for me! I've taken drum lessons, performance classes, and just about every other course they have had to offer over the years. Harmony House always provides students with fun teachers and a positive learning environment which can be a rarity these days.. I have made several close friends over the years at Harmony House and wouldn't trade the years of lessons for anything. Sandi herself is the most motivating positive individual out there and her vision for harmony house is spectacular. She truly believes every single student has their own talents and it is her job to bring it all out! Thanks Harmony House 🙂

Harmony House Music Studio not only provides a high quality of instruction and unique learning opportunities but it also provides something that not all places of musical instruction can hope to create, a community. I was able to expand my passion for music and explore my abilities with the help of the amazing staff and their constant support and encouragement. I first joined Harmony House when I was 6 years old and continued to be apart of the school for 13 years. Throughout my time at the school I gained invaluable friendships with the other students and a self-confidence that I developed through the many solo and group performances I got to do and look back on fondly. My experiences with the school are ones I will cherish and never forget!

Looking back, it’s easy to see how much Harmony House has helped me grow, not only as a musician, but also as a person. The student directed environment is fleshed out with incredibly passionate teachers and a uniquely structured lesson program. The teachers are clearly talented musicians in their own right, and are always full of great advice for both recording and performance. My favourite part of Harmony House would have to be the group classes. While individual skills are foundational, the group classes create an opportunity for budding musicians to work with other students and expand their abilities in a low pressure, insanely fun setting. The Harmony House community somehow manages to be both tight-knit and wildly inclusive, and one I would recommend to just about anyone!

As I write this review we are driving to Northern BC and I am listening to my 2 youngest kids singing in the back seat. The last few hours they have been engaged in lively discussions of music theory, harmonizing and improv singing! My daughter said during our trip "Mom I realized how lucky we were to have done Harmony House music school." Our family has been a part of Harmony House for over 14 years. We stayed with Harmony House for so long because of the numerous benefits and opportunities it provided. Our kids were able to develop their confidence and public speaking skills through the numerous performance venues that were part of the music school curriculum. A few examples include community parades, fundraising concerts, and a chance to record in a professional recording studio! This combined with the new friendships they formed with the other students provided an amazing atmosphere for learning, personal development, and fun!

Hands down - best music school ever. Kids/youth stay engaged and motivated because they get to do the kind of music they want to do. Promotes music for life - and if you want - for work as well. Amazing (for adults too!!)
